Google is merging its AI divisions

Yesterday, Sundar Pichai announced that Google is restructuring itself in order to better invest in artificial intelligence. The company will merge its DeepMind division with Google Brain, its research division that has been tinkering with artificial intelligence for years.

Google is renaming its artificial intelligence division to "Google DeepMind" and CEO Sundar Pichai wrote about it in a blog post.

"This group, called Google DeepMind, will bring together two leading research groups in the AI ​​field: the Brain team from Google Research, and DeepMind. Their collective accomplishments in AI over the last decade span AlphaGo, Transformers, word2vec, WaveNet, AlphaFold, sequence to sequence models, distillation, deep reinforcement learning, and distributed systems and software frameworks like TensorFlow and JAX for expressing, training and deploying large scale ML models."

Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis will lead the new company, while Google Brain's AI chief Jeff Dean, considered one of the world's best programmers, will become head of research at both Google Research and Google DeepMind.
