11 Actors Who Could Have Played Gibbs on NCIS

Before Mark Harmon landed the role, these famous actors were considered to play Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Mark Harmon is Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. It's difficult to picture anyone else capturing the character's unique blend of gruff charm and quiet authority. But as it turns out, Harmon wasn't the only actor considered for the part. In fact, a number of famous names were in the running, including two Oscar winners: Chris Cooper and Tom Berenger.

Cooper is known for his roles in films such as American Beauty, The Bourne Identity, and October Sky, while Berenger has starred in films like Platoon and Major League. The list of potential Gibbs also included Val Kilmer (Top Gun, Real Genius), Patrick Swayze, Kevin Bacon (Footloose, Tremors, Mystic River), Clive Owen (Close My Eyes, Children of Men, The International), Alec Baldwin, Aidan Quinn (Desperately Seeking Susan, Benny & Joon, Practical Magic), and Charlie Sheen.

Some actors were considered more seriously than others. Andrew McCarthy, known for his roles in films like Pretty in Pink, St. Elmo's Fire, and Weekend at Bernie's, even met with NCIS creator Don Bellisario to discuss the role. Perhaps the most intriguing name on the list is Harrison Ford. While Ford's name was often mentioned as a good fit for Gibbs, it seems that this was more wishful thinking than a serious possibility. Charles Floyd Johnson, executive producer on JAG and NCIS, acknowledged that Ford's name came up often due to his perceived suitability for the role, but doubted it ever went beyond casual discussion.

Peter Golden, the former head of CBS casting, confirmed that big names were often floated around in the early stages of casting. While actors of Ford's stature rarely took on television roles in the early 2000s, their names were still part of initial conversations. Ultimately, though, the producers all agreed that Mark Harmon was the perfect choice. Charles Floyd Johnson noted that Harmon "made a big impression", while Peter Golden felt the show's significance increased once Harmon accepted the role.

Casting director Susan Bluestein had worked with Harmon previously and believed he possessed the "gravitas" needed for the character. While her initial suggestion of Harmon was met with some hesitation, her confidence in him was well-founded. Harmon's casting was a defining moment for NCIS, and it's difficult to imagine the show becoming as successful without him.
