Peaky Blinders has no shortage of larger-than-life characters, with Shelby family favorites like Arthur (played by Paul Anderson) and of course Tommy (Cillian Murphy). But it’s Alfie Solomon (Tom Hardy) who stole every scene he’s in. Following the events of seasons four and five of the BBC drama, some fans are confused as to what happened to Camden Town’s smuggler.
Did Alfie Solomons survive in Peaky Blinders?
Tommy and Alfie finally came to blows during the season four finale, after working together for several seasons.
Tommy had a hard time trusting Alfie, but they agreed to put aside their differences for the sake of a mutually beneficial business agreement.
Working from Camden Town, Alfie was an expert in smuggling and cooking books, something Tommy needed outside of Birmingham. However, it all ended in season four, as Alfie betrayed Tommy when the American mafia’s attempted to take over the English crime world.
When confronted on a beach, Alfie made it clear that only one of them would make it home alive.
As a result of the duel, Alfie was shot in the face in the final moments of the fourth season.
However, season five surprised fans with Alfie’s return, shocking viewers and Tommy.
Alive and living in Margate, says to Tommy, “How soon did you find out I wasn’t dead?” Tommy replied, “You wrote me a letter, Alfie.” Alfie replies, “Me? In the beginning I was given a lot of drugs. I was lying there, the tide came and woke me up. “I remember looking around and thinking,” If this is hell, this is a lot like Margate. “
The scene brought Alfie back to life, much to the joy of the series’ adoring audience.
However, director Anthony Bryne questioned the scene in a recent interview with the BBC podcast “Obsessed …” The director suggested that this moment can just be seen in Tommy’s head, and the scene is played out in limbo.
“I’ve always played it for real, everything happens to me. Maybe the scene with Alfie is something, Bryne explained.
It remains to be seen how this will affect Season 6. However, it may play a role in Tommy’s PTSD and trauma that influenced his character throughout the show.
It is unknown if Tom Hardy will return to reprise the role of Alfie in season six. Neither Hardy nor the show creator Steven Knight have confirmed his return.
After the failed assassination attempt on Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin), viewers last saw Tommy with a gun to his head.
Season six of the show marks the end of Shelby’s devastation narrative, but Tommy’s closing scene from season five will not be his final appearance on screen.
Season six’s plot is still a mystery, but Tommy will have to pick himself up and regain control.
Entering the world of politics has brought endless complications to the Shelbys, with Oswald Mosley likely to be just the tip of the iceberg in the sixth and final season.
Peaky Blinders seasons one-five are available to watch on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.
