THE HANDMAID’S TALE Serena Joy Star revealed her character’s fate in the upcoming fifth season and hinted at how she’ll handle Fred’s death.

The fourth season of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale ended with fans cheering along and their jaws dropping when they saw June Osborne (played by Elisabeth Moss) finally get revenge. Although fans have yet to see Serena Joy’s (Yvonne Strahovski) reaction to the news of her husband’s death, the actress has hinted at how her character will handle it in the upcoming season.

Actress Yvonne joined other stars and the creators of The Handmaid’s Tale for a conversation with Deadline to talk about season four and the prospects of the next instalment.

She spoke about the death of her on-screen husband Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), saying, “I am personally very saddened by the death of Joe.”

After Fred’s death, Serena was still in custody, waiting to hear if she would be released or punished for her crimes in Gilead.

Fans wondered if she would stay in Canada or return to Gilead once she learned the news about Fred. And much like viewers, Yvonne revealed, “I really do not know what path they are going to take with Serena.”

Despite not knowing, the actress shared hopes for her character, “I keep imagining her evolving.” Yvonne added: “I think in the world of therapy or whatever and I think Serena is so far behind.

She seems like a child dealing with her emotions. I think she’s just coming to understand that she has emotions and things that are bubbling up inside of her.”

Before Serena was taken into custody, she was a very different person in Gilead, especially when June was her Handmaid.

She was a cold, heartless woman who brutally punished June for not being pregnant in earlier seasons. As Handmaid, it was June’s job to conceive and carry the child for Fred and Serena because they both were barren.

This was a law in Gilead that forced all Handmaids to participate in a ritualised act of ceremony where the Commander would rape them, while the Wives held them down.

After countless failed attempts, the desperate Serena secretly enlisted the help of Fred’s driver Nick Blaine (Max Minghella) to take over.

However, her attitude changed once she went into custody in Canada, where she found out she was miraculously pregnant. Fans immediately saw a softer side of Serena as she began to see a different future for herself now that she was pregnant.

Season four saw her reunite with June and ask for forgiveness, however June was filled with rage and the need for revenge, so she wasn’t having any of it.

In the final episode, after Fred was killed, his finger was mailed to Serena, unfortunately, fans never got to see her reaction as a guard opened her letter first. Speaking further about Serena’s fate in the upcoming fifth season, Yvonne said, “She recognises them ( emotions ) and they’re exploding out of her.”

She concluded, “Whether she can ever really come to grips with her trauma and what happened and what she’s responsible for – that’s another story.” With Serena soon to be a mother, she may have to overcome the trauma of her husband’s death to raise her child.

It is yet to be determined if she will stay in Canada to live in freedom or continue Fred’s legacy in Gilead.
