Tom Selleck on Aging, Ranch Life, and Why He'll Never Dye His Hair
Tom Selleck: Still Going Strong at 77
Tom Selleck, the beloved star of "Magnum P.I." and "Blue Bloods," is showing us that age is just a number. At 77, he's not letting anything slow him down, enjoying his acting career and staying active on his ranch.
From Magnum to Ranch Hand
Selleck’s been a fixture on our screens for decades. From his breakout role as charming private investigator Thomas Magnum in "Magnum P.I." to his current role as Police Commissioner Frank Reagan in "Blue Bloods," he's shown incredible staying power. Despite rumors of him leaving the show, he's confirmed to be back for season 13! He even admitted he loves what he does and wants to keep doing it.
Aging with Grace (and Naturally)
Tom Selleck has shared his thoughts on the physical challenges that come with getting older. He's mentioned that his body has "let him down" a bit, especially after all those years of doing stunts. He shared in a previous interview that the "stop-and-go" nature of stunt work takes its toll over time. He even joked about how he notices the effects of those stunts on his friends.
"Well, it lets me down from the point of view that I can't do, or won't do, what I used to… my back's kind of messed up… You just see the price of all those stunts," Selleck shared.
However, he's not letting these challenges keep him down. In fact, he actively works to stay healthy and fit.
Life on the Ranch: No Gym Needed
Why not skip the gym? Selleck enjoys his exercise the traditional way: by tending to his 63-acre ranch. He mentioned that he takes on a lot of the “grunt work” himself, like clearing brush and planting trees. He's even planted about a thousand trees himself, including a hundred ancient oaks. This active lifestyle keeps him in great shape.
Welcoming the Gray
Selleck is really passionate about his natural hair color. He just won't dye it, even though people keep asking him if he does. He sees his gray hair as a wonderful "blessing" and a natural part of aging. He even mentioned how he asked the "Blue Bloods" makeup artists to add some gray to his mustache at one point!
“I didn’t end up dyeing my hair.” I'm really tired of people saying that I dye my hair! This is it, my friend… "You know, at my age, turning gray feels like a bit of a blessing," Selleck stated.
Like Father, Like Son
Selleck also talked how he feels he’s becoming more like his father as he ages. He thinks of his dad as a "great guy" and a "fantastic role model." This bond with his father brings an extra dimension to how he views aging and life.
