Who is Detective Hailey Upton-Halstead?

Detective Hailey Upton-Halstead is a member of the CPD Intelligence Unit. She is the partner and wife of Detective Jay Halstead. She is portrayed by Tracy Spiridakos. Her family ran a Greektown diner when she was a kid. Mr. Upton was extremely abusive, regularly beating her mother, brothers, and herself. Despite the abuse, her mother stayed at home with her father long after she and her siblings had moved out. When the diner was robbed in 2003 when she was 10.

She stayed by Sergeant Trudy Platt’s desk, who was part of a Robbery-Homicide unit at the time, until the crime was solved, all the while worrying about her father’s health. This incident, combined with Hailey’s childhood abuse, inspired her to become a cop, eventually becoming a member of the same Robbery-Homicide unit. After working on an undercover case, she was promoted to detective. She later joins Sergeant Hank Voight’s Intelligence Unit, where she works alongside Detective Jay Halstead.

Chicago P.D. Season 10: Is Hailey Upton leaving the show?

The actress told Devdiscourse that Upton is going to have to dig deep to get through the tough emotions she’s going through, but that she will ultimately come out of this period stronger, quote, “She’s a badass, but she’s also really vulnerable and she’s very unapologetic about who she is,” she added. “And she’s got a very strong moral compass.”

According to One Chicago Center, “In an effort to not only maintain the character’s marriage with Halstead but to make room for newer characters, like the recently minted rookie, Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar). While it would make sense on some fronts, namely; the maintaining of the Upton and Halstead relationship, it’s not going to be an exit we see anytime soon. Tracy Spiridakos has not hinted at any such plans and has actually seen the Halstead departure as a chance to develop Upton in ways that we previously haven’t seen.”

Hence, looking at Chicago PD as a whole, Upton’s departure would be a huge loss, as the show is still dealing with the fallout from firing Halstead. This means that suddenly getting rid of another character would not only trivialize Halstead’s exit but would also add to the fans’ sense of loss which needs to be dealt with in a proper way and not just for the sake of doing it.
