China plans to send humans to Mars by 2033

In May, China landed on Mars for the first time and has now revealed some plans for future Mars missions.

The state-owned China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology unveiled plans for a first manned mission to the red planet in 2033 at a space conference in Russia. Before that, China intends to send robots to Mars that can begin preparing and building a base for taikonauts to live on.

China also said it plans to send missions to Mars in 2035, 2037, 2041 and 2043. In addition, it plans to study techniques that will allow in the future people sent to Mars to return to Earth.

The U.S. space agency NASA has previously stated that it plans to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s.
